Justin Gaethje captures UFC lightweight title at White House

Justin Gaethje has won the undisputed UFC lightweight championship, stopping Ilia Topuria at UFC Freedom 250 on the South Lawn of the White House. Gaethje entered as a heavy underdog against Topuria, who had looked nearly invincible coming into the June 14 bout celebrating America's 250th anniversary.

The victory marks Gaethje's first undisputed title after two prior championship defeats — first to Khabib Nurmagomedov, then to Charles Oliveira in Arizona. MMA Mania reports that Gaethje sent Topuria to the hospital with the performance, two years removed from his own viral knockout loss to Max Holloway at UFC 300.

Gaethje's record-setting violence and bonus streak

Gaethje has collected 17 post-fight bonuses across 16 UFC appearances, including a record 11 Fight of the Night awards. He remains the only fighter in company history to earn a bonus in each of his first seven Octagon bouts, and ties for third-most knockdowns in lightweight division history with seven. In 2024, he knocked out Dustin Poirier to claim the BMF belt with what the outlet described as "one of the cleanest head kicks you'll ever see."

"I don't plan on being alive after my fights because of how much I put myself into the fire," Gaethje has said previously, per the report. That approach has defined his entire UFC run — a reputation for must-watch violence that has made him what the story calls "your favorite fighter's favorite fighter." Gaethje also handed Paddy Pimblett his first UFC loss earlier this year before the Topuria upset.

The lightweight division's newest champion now faces the question of whether to retire on top. Gaethje reportedly walked away with an 825,000-dollar bonus payout from the White House card, adding to the storybook finish at 36 years old. No next fight date has been announced.
