Josh Taylor Vs. Ekow Essuman Preview

Josh Taylor takes on Ekow Essuman on May 24 in their welterweight clash, as we take a preview of this fight.

Taylor boxes at welterweight for the first time in his career. He enters the fight on a two-fight losing streak. Defeats to Teofimo Lopez and Jack Catterall have raised question marks over his form. Taylor, who is the former Undisputed Junior Welterweight Champion, has raised suggestions that he may no longer be able to make 140, thus being the reason to move up.

Taylor has 13 KO wins from his 19, as there are questions over whether his power can transcend to 147. A win takes him closer to his aim of being a two-weight world champion. Essuman comes into the fight with a majority decision win against Ben Vaughan. That was his second win on the bounce, taking his record to 21-1-0. His only loss was to Harry Scarff back in 2023, but Taylor is by far his biggest test.

Pre-Fight

"I’ve prove you all wrong before. I can do it again, no problem. Nobody expected me to become undisputed world champion. Every time I’ve stepped up my whole career — at first it was the Ohara Davies fight, ‘oh it’s a bit too soon for him,’ blew him away. Then it was Viktor Postol and it was ‘this is far too soon for him’…and then going against Ramirez, ‘oh he’s come forward, aggressive,’ the underdog again. And I kept proving everybody wrong," Taylor stated

"It is what it is. We’re in for an exciting fight. We’re both similar in that respect. We both come forward, we’re both very aggressive. He’s a good counterpuncher, people don’t know that I’m adept at counter punching but it’s the perfect stage to show the other things I can do and to what level as well. I’ve been crying out for it for a while now, to just break out of that little pond that I was fighting in. And yeah, I’m hella excited for it. Former undisputed champion, it’s a nice big step up and it’s good to be here on the top table," Essuman said
