Jones Fires Back At Cormier Over GOAT Remarks
Jon Jones accused Daniel Cormier of jealousy after the former two-division champion mentioned Jones' sole career blemish while praising Khabib Nurmagomedov's undefeated record.
Cormier appeared in an ALF Global video Tuesday highlighting Nurmagomedov's 29-0 run, pointing to Jones' 2009 disqualification loss to Matt Hamill as evidence that even the greatest fighters slip up. Jones, who was flagged for illegal 12-6 elbows in that bout, surfaced in the comments section hours later with a sharp rebuttal, per MMA Fighting.
Jones Claims Early UFC Inexperience
Jones wrote that he entered the promotion so green he had never heard the term 12-6 elbow before stepping into the cage against Hamill. He added that his entire career has consisted of main-event title fights, a point Cormier did not dispute. Jones then turned personal, telling Cormier that his jealousy runs deep and urging him to stop using interviews to take shots.
The two former heavyweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">light heavyweight champions fought twice under the UFC banner. Jones won a unanimous decision at UFC 182 and stopped Cormier with a head kick at UFC 214, though the second result was later changed to a no-contest after Jones tested positive for banned substances. They have continued trading barbs in retirement, with Cormier recently stating that any supposed truce between them was fabricated by Jones.
Cormier's video segment focused primarily on Nurmagomedov, noting that every other all-time great — Georges St-Pierre, Demetrious Johnson, Henry Cejudo, and Islam Makhachev — has at least one loss on record. Jones posted a follow-up message reminding followers of his own resume. The heavyweight champion has not yet announced his next fight date.
