Garry Ready To Dethrone Makhachev
Ian Garry is not arriving in Philadelphia to survive Islam Makhachev — he is arriving to beat him.
The welterweight laid out his case for the UFC 330 title fight on August 15 with a confidence that left no room for doubt. Garry believes his physical attributes create problems Makhachev has never encountered, and he is prepared to prove it on the ground as much as anywhere else.
"He's never fought someone as long and tall as me. He's not fought someone as fast as me. He's not fought someone who has the distance management, the boxing capabilities, the head movement that I do, but also the takedown defense.
“He might get me down. I want to prove to the world that he can't submit me. I want to prove to the world that I can get back up. I want to prove to the world that I can beat him in his own world. I'm going to bounce him on his skull. I'm going to take his title,” Garry
Garry is directly addressing Makhachev's most dangerous weapon and declaring his intention to survive it. For a fighter whose grappling has been questioned as a potential liability against a champion built around submission finishing, that framing is either a sign of genuine preparation or a significant miscalculation.
Makhachev has operated primarily at lightweight, where the frame of the average opponent is considerably smaller than what Garry presents at welterweight. The transition from 155 to 170 has gone smoothly in terms of results, but Garry's length and reach create distance management problems that are difficult to replicate in a training environment. Whether that translates into competitive advantage against a champion of Makhachev's calibre is the question Philadelphia will answer.
Makhachev defended the lightweight title four times before vacating and moving up, dethroning Jack Della Maddalena last November to become a two-division champion and tie Anderson Silva's all-time UFC winning streak record at 16. A victory over Garry makes him the outright record holder.
Garry arrives off back-to-back wins over Carlos Prates and former champion Belal Muhammad — the kind of résumé that earns a title shot without guaranteeing anything once the Octagon door closes.
