Garcia Confirms Benn Is His Final Golden Boy Obligation

Ryan Garcia has confirmed he has one fight remaining on his Golden Boy Promotions contract before he is free to move on — and that fight is against Conor Benn on September 12th.

Garcia has been with Oscar De La Hoya's company since his professional debut in 2016. Over a decade, Golden Boy helped build him from a promising prospect into one of boxing's most recognisable names — WBC welterweight champion, pay-per-view headliner, and a social media phenomenon with a reach that extends well beyond the sport. The relationship is nearly over.

The Benn fight is the final obligation. If Garcia performs as he did in his defeat to Rolando Romero, walking into a high-pressure puncher like Benn could end badly — and a loss, particularly a stoppage, would arrive at the worst possible moment. Heading into free agency as a beaten champion is one thing. Heading into it as a fighter who just got stopped is another.

There is also an argument, a counterintuitive one, that a bad night against Benn actually strengthens the case for going independent. Under a traditional promotional deal, losing to a dangerous puncher hands the promoter the leverage.

If everything goes wrong on September 12th, Garcia still has the star power to survive it. But arriving at free agency as champion, with a statement win over Benn behind him, would be a different conversation entirely. That is the version of this story Garcia will be hoping to write.
