Gaethje Reveals Topuria's Fatal Flaws At White House

Justin Gaethje says Ilia Topuria's footwork gave away the blueprint for his fourth-round beatdown at UFC Freedom 250.

Gaethje stopped the featherweight champion so brutally in their White House superfight that Topuria's corner waved off the bout before the fifth round started, both orbitals broken. In a new interview with Demetrious Johnson, per MMA Mania, the lightweight explained how he timed Topuria's rhythm from the opening bell.

Topuria's Predictable Movement Cost Him

"His feet never change rhythm," Gaethje said. "It's forwards or backwards. So, ultimately, it's about timing his feet and interrupting." He added that Topuria's lateral movement never varied, making it easy to anticipate when the champion would load up on his power right hand. Instead of retreating from the punch like most opponents, Gaethje squared Topuria up and controlled space, lifting his left arm to block the right hand while weathering follow-up body shots that nearly buckled him.

Beyond the technical breakdown, Gaethje said Topuria made critical errors in the 12 weeks before the fight. "He made terrible mistakes emotionally when it comes to understanding what we're doing here, and he paid for it," he told Johnson. Gaethje believes Topuria entered the cage unprepared for someone who could survive his best shots across four rounds, a miscalculation rooted in overconfidence.

The UFC is reportedly considering an immediate rematch between the two.
