Gaethje Reveals Why Topuria Was Easy To Predict

Justin Gaethje credits tactical discipline for his fourth-round stoppage of Ilia Topuria at UFC White House, telling Demetrious Johnson that the featherweight champion's predictable movement made him vulnerable once Gaethje survived an early storm.

Gaethje absorbed heavy pressure in round two before turning the fight around and battering Topuria until the corner waved off the bout. The win gave Gaethje the undisputed lightweight title for the first time in his career and moved him to 2-0 in 2026.

Speaking on Johnson's podcast, as reported by MMA Fighting, Gaethje pinpointed one flaw that opened the door for his success. "His feet never change rhythms," Gaethje said. "He never changes rhythm with his feet. It's always pop, pop, pop, pop, and it's forwards or backwards. He's very rarely moving lateral."

Gaethje added that Topuria repeated mistakes in the 12 weeks before the fight, treating the matchup like past wins instead of preparing for a new challenge. "He forgot who he was and how dangerous this game is," Gaethje told Johnson. "Every fight is so individual and nothing matters."

Topuria posted early celebration videos on social media before the bout, a move Gaethje said reflected overconfidence. Gaethje himself is adamant he will not fight again in 2026, though UFC lead commentator Jon Anik said he has heard internal talk of a rematch for Gaethje's first title defense.
