Gaethje's Manager Proposes Makhachev For Final Fight

Justin Gaethje's manager has pitched a superfight between the newly crowned lightweight champion and welterweight titleholder Islam Makhachev as the final bout of Gaethje's career.

Ali Abdelaziz, who represents both fighters, told the Pound 4 Pound podcast that money should guide Gaethje's next decision, not legacy. "If Justin Gaethje is to choose one fight, I only want him to fight one fight, and he needs to pick the biggest guy who is the biggest check next to him," Abdelaziz said, per MMA Fighting. "Whoever's going to give him the most zeroes."

Makhachev Option Floated After Gaethje's Topuria Upset

Gaethje stopped Ilia Topuria in June at UFC White House to claim undisputed gold at 155 pounds. At 37 years old after a 17-year run, the Arizona native has made no commitment to fighting again. Abdelaziz acknowledged that a bout with Makhachev would require Gaethje to vacate the lightweight strap, but argued the payday would justify the move.

The manager dismissed other potential opponents. Charles Oliveira brings nothing to the table, he said, while Arman Tsarukyan represents the toughest stylistic challenge in the division. A rematch with Max Holloway remains an option, Abdelaziz allowed, though he deferred final say to Gaethje and his coaching staff.

Abdelaziz also declared Gaethje the greatest American fighter in UFC history, putting him ahead of Jon Jones and others. He recounted a recent three-hour meeting between Gaethje and President Trump, describing the admiration the president showed for the lightweight champion. Makhachev currently sits atop MMA Fighting's pound-for-pound rankings after winning titles in two weight classes.
