Former UFC lightweight Din Thomas has apologized to Gillian Robertson after announcing his retirement as her cornerman immediately following her loss at UFC 330 in Philadelphia.

Thomas, who worked with Robertson for seven years, called his timing on the night of August 15 "completely irresponsible" and "despicable," per MMA Mania. Robertson dropped a flyweight title fight to champion Mackenzie Dern, ending a five-fight winning streak.

The retired lightweight told the Deep Waters podcast that he regrets overshadowing Robertson's career achievements with his personal decision. "I selfishly stole her moment that night, and instead of congratulating her on her run, I stole her moment," Thomas said. "I'm ashamed. I'm embarrassed, but I'm not too big to say I'm sorry."

Thomas praised Robertson's progression from hoping to string together a few wins to breaking UFC records during their partnership. "Gillian, I love you. I got your back. I've always had your back," he said on the podcast. "Whatever you need, I'm always here for you, the same way I've been for you the last seven years when it was just us."

The apology came after two days of online criticism, including from UFC commentator Jon Anik. Thomas has worked as a coach since his final fight in 2013 and remains a regular on UFC broadcasts and the "Lookin' for a Fight" series with Matt Serra and Dana White. Robertson has not commented publicly on the situation.
