Islam Makhachev is leaning toward a fight with Carlos Prates for his next welterweight title defense, with opening odds placing the champion as a clear favorite over both Prates and Michael Morales.

Makhachev successfully defended the 170-pound belt against Ian Machado Garry via unanimous decision at UFC 330 last weekend in Philadelphia. The champion told reporters afterward he hopes to return before year's end or in early January, per MMA Mania.

BetOnline has installed Makhachev at minus-250 against Prates, the top-ranked welterweight contender, and minus-200 versus Morales, who sits at number three. Morales served as the official backup for the UFC 330 headliner.

At the post-fight press conference, Makhachev praised both potential opponents. "I'm happy we have some real contenders in this division," he said. "These guys, Morales, Prates, they make me train every day more hard because I can see these are the real fighters that can give me good fights. Maybe Prates because Morales also is good but I don't remember last time he fight. If you ask who is more deserving, I think Carlos Prates."
