Demetrious Johnson explains why he retired from MMA
Demetrious Johnson retired from mixed martial arts because he had nothing left to prove and wanted to challenge his mind instead of his body.
The former UFC and One Championship flyweight champion called time on his career in 2023 after defending his One title, and told reporters at the UFC Hall of Fame red carpet that staying humble throughout his career made stepping away simpler. "I think for me, probably because my whole career, I've stayed humble and had humility," Johnson said, per Sherdog. "You know, I never let the lights get to me."
Johnson walked away from fame to mow the lawn
Johnson captured the inaugural UFC flyweight belt in 2012 at UFC 152 and set a promotional record with 11 straight defenses before moving to One, where he became a major draw. But even after winning the UFC title, he kept his life normal. He recalled doing an interview with Kenny Florian and Bas Rutten on AXS TV right after that first title win and telling them he had put the prize money in the bank and needed to cut his grass.
Now inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame's Modern Wing, Johnson said he felt he had accomplished everything combat sports could offer. "For me, I was like, I felt like I've done everything. I don't know what else is left to do," he said. "Let me go challenge myself with my intellect, and see if I can provide for my family in that way."
Johnson finished his career 25-4-1 and never stayed past his prime. He is widely regarded as one of the best flyweights in history.
