Conor McGregor announces surgery, vows to fulfill final UFC fight
Conor McGregor will undergo surgery following the leg injury that ended his UFC 329 main event against Max Holloway after just 69 seconds, the former two-division champion announced Monday on Instagram.
McGregor, who fought for the first time since breaking his leg against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021, posted that he plans to return for one final fight under his UFC contract. "Surgery. Prehab. Return to martial arts practice. Go again. Final fight of the contract," he wrote in a statement first reported by MMA Fighting.
McGregor's comeback attempt derailed by injury
The nature of the injury remains unspecified, though McGregor denied in a statement Saturday that it was related to a pre-existing condition. He had not competed since 2021, with his comeback facing multiple delays including an injury in 2024 that postponed a planned bout with Michael Chandler.
Holloway, who now holds a 1-1 record against McGregor following Saturday's technical knockout, has already volunteered to complete the trilogy. McGregor won their first meeting in 2013 by decision. The Irish fighter turns 38 on Tuesday.
McGregor's team had initially targeted April 2027 as the latest date to complete his UFC contract, though the severity of the injury is likely to push that timeline back. No date for his return has been set.
