Canelo Vs. Mbilli Suffers A Setback
The Canelo Alvarez and Christian Mbilli fight is moving — but not far.
The scheduled September 12 clash in Riyadh has been postponed, with a late October date in the same city now being targeted. No reason has been given for the delay. A new official date is expected to be confirmed shortly.
The fight carries significant weight for Canelo specifically. The Mexican star has not stepped into the ring since suffering a defeat to Terence Crawford in an undisputed middleweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">super middleweight title fight last September — a loss that handed him his third career defeat and ended his reign as the division's dominant force.
Mbilli arrived at the full WBC championship through circumstance rather than a traditional title fight. Crawford's retirement following his victory over Canelo opened the belt, and Mbilli was elevated from interim to full champion at 168 pounds — a promotion that gives him the legitimate title status Canelo needs to chase without the pedigree of a long-standing reign behind it.
A late October date in Riyadh keeps the Saudi Arabia boxing calendar active through the autumn and maintains the momentum that Turki Alalshikh has built around the kingdom as a destination for marquee fights. The venue and the city remain. The date has shifted by roughly six weeks.
For Canelo, the objective has not changed. A world title at super middleweight is what he came back for. Late October is now when he goes to get it.
