Bill Haney says Shakur Stevenson silent on 144-pound deal
Bill Haney says Shakur Stevenson has gone quiet on a 144-pound catchweight deal the two sides agreed to online more than a week ago.
Devin Haney's father and trainer told DAZN's "Inside The Ring" on Monday that Stevenson has yet to follow through on the arrangement the fighters struck on social media June 9. "Shakur hasn't responded to the 144-pound agreement that Devin Haney said that he will have with him," Bill Haney said, per The Ring.
Haney targeting Stevenson before Mount Rushmore claim
The elder Haney framed Stevenson as the final obstacle before his son can argue for all-time-great status. "We have Shakur Stevenson standing in the way of Devin's quest to be on the Mount Rushmore of boxing," he said. "Because with three divisions and the youngest undisputed champion, I don't know if we're going to get all the respect we need unless we run through all of them."
Haney, ranked No. 8 on The Ring's pound-for-pound list and the top welterweight contender, became a three-division champion in November when he took the WBO welterweight belt off Brian Norman Jr. Stevenson sits at No. 3 pound-for-pound and claimed his fourth divisional title in January, outpointing Teofimo Lopez for the Ring and WBO junior welterweight straps.
Both fighters are rumored to be joining Zuffa Boxing. If the Stevenson bout falls through, Bill Haney said former WBO lightweight champion Keyshawn Davis could be next as the mandatory challenger. A rematch with Ryan Garcia remains off the table unless Garcia submits to extended VADA testing after his April 2024 win over Haney was overturned to a no-contest for ostarine use.
