Ben Whittaker Nears High-Stakes IBF Eliminator Against Conor Wallace in Birmingham
Rising heavyweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">light heavyweight star Ben Whittaker is in advanced negotiations to face Australia's Conor Wallace in an IBF world title final eliminator on October 3rd.
The highly anticipated clash is targeted for the Utilita Arena in Birmingham, giving Whittaker a massive home-turf advantage. This isn’t just a showcase fight. With the IBF rankings opening up after Michael Eifert vacated his position, the winner of this bout will slide directly into the mandatory challenger spot. That means the victor will be next in line for a shot at the division's unified kingpin, Dmitry Bivol.
On paper, this is a fascinating clash between a highly-touted Olympic darling and a battle-tested road warrior. The 2020 Tokyo Olympic silver medalist has been on an absolute tear. Known for his flashy, matrix-style showmanship, Whittaker has found serious power recently, ending his last four fights inside of two rounds. That run includes an early stoppage in his rematch with Liam Cameron and a dominant demolition of Richard Rivera just last month.
The 30-year-old Australian is technically the higher-ranked fighter in this matchup. Wallace earned his spot by edging out Jerome Pampellone in a grueling battle. However, there is a catch: Wallace has never fought outside of his home country of Australia, making a trip to Birmingham a massive psychological and environmental hurdle.
While Wallace is undoubtedly the highest-ranked opponent Whittaker has faced to date, critics are still questioning if this is the true "elite-tier" test fans have been waiting for. Wallace has a solid record, but he lacks the global profile of a world champion.
If the deal is finalized, Whittaker will have the perfect stage on October 3rd to silence his doubters, secure a mandatory title shot, and prove he is ready for the very top of the 175-pound division.
