Munguia To Rematch Surace; Is It The Right Decision?

Jaime Munguia will rematch Bruno Surace on April 12 as he tries to avenge the loss.
Munguia was knocked out in round six in a massive upset, losing his second fight. It was another defeat to add to his resume after coming second best to Canelo Alvarez. But Munguia was expected to beat Surace as he faced him in his backyard. He also had the benefit of heading into his second fight with Top Rank. He left Golden Boy Promotions after the Canelo loss to rebuild his career. But those plans suffered a blow, leaving the pressure on Munguia to win the rematch. He was targeting fights with Edgar Berlanga, Christian Mbilli and even Caleb Plant.
But if he comes up short against Surace in another fight, he will move down the pecking order. Jose Benavidez Sr. warned him not to take this fight. He urged Munguia to move on and rack up some wins before returning stronger. There was a perception that Munguia overlooked his man after dropping him early on in the fight. Munguia had to be switched on for the full 12 rounds in the Canelo fight. But Surace caught Munguia coming in recklessly to end the fight. If he were to beat Surace, then a fight against Berlanga is possible. Surace was open to the rematch.
Munguia’s Issue
“That’s a big mistake that he made. I think he should have stopped him, and he should have went with everything and took things serious. It’s a little hard. I would let that go away. [And] I would not take the rematch. I would go on with my life and not accept that fight,” Benavidez Sr said.
“I know that he is an excellent boxer. So, we worked on our counter punches. He is a true warrior. I want to thank him for the opportunity. This was a big experience for me. Middleweight is my true weight class. But we’ll see if [a rematch] can happen,” Surace stated
Munguia’s Next Step
Munguia slammed Berlanga’s reaction to his loss against Canelo. Berlanga was seen celebrating in Mexico, giving the impression he was happy to have gone 12 rounds. He even celebrated after the bell, hugging Canelo and calling him his idol. That looked far from a man who believed he could win the fight. But he did secure a career-highest payday, putting him in the position to face the other big figures in the division.
He will also fancy his chances against Munguia since Canelo did not stop him. Facing Munguia should arguably be easier on paper. But before Munguia looks to the future, he must get past Surace first. However, he faces pressure over his training set up. Former world champion Antonio Tarver has suggested that Munguia needs to start afresh and make big changes to his camp. That has left the boxer with a decision to make before his next fight.
“He needs a #MasterTrainer they’re not getting the lessons… How long have I been saying this?,” Tarver revealed
