A 140-pound crossroads bout between Keyshawn Davis and Jamaine Ortiz takes place on January 31, as pros picked their winner.

Davis makes his junior welterweight debut, knowing he has plenty to prove. Last June, Davis was stripped of his WBO lightweight title after missing the 135-pound limit by 4.3 lbs for a homecoming fight against Edwin De Los Santos. The bout was ultimately scrapped, and Davis later admitted battling with alcohol abuse and mental health struggles. Davis parted ways with longtime trainer Brian “BoMac” McIntyre. He is now under the guidance of Randell Trumell Johnson.

Meanwhile, Ortiz’s only two losses were against the very top of the sport—Teofimo Lopez and Vasiliy Lomachenko. Ortiz accepted the Davis challenge after a planned IBF title eliminator against Richardson Hitchins fell through in December due to purse disagreements.

Pre-Fight

“In camp, I was basically drinking every single day. I was just hurt from the previous camp, and the one before that. Things were just lingering on. I was knocking out Gustavo Lemos and Denys Berinchyk with a bad mental. I was like, I can fight, I can do this, if I can just get to the fight, I’ll be good. That was really the only reason I couldn’t lose those extra pounds because I was just drinking. I feel amazing in this training camp. I took accountability for everything that I did and apologized for being wrong with every relationship that I had,” Davis stated

“I was just praying for moments where I could be on a card like this and showcase my skills and be on the world’s biggest stage and platform. It’s finally here. I’m truly blessed and honored and excited to showcase my talent and what I could do. He’s a good opponent. He’s a strong fighter. He’s a solid fighter. He has experience, a lot of amateur experience as well. At this level, that’s what you expect to face. Top-level competition, great fighters, you’re not going to be fighting no bums, especially if you want to be great,” Ortiz said
