Early Life and Amateur Career
Denys Berinchyk, born on May 5, 1988, in Krasnodon, Ukraine, began his journey in boxing at a young age. Growing up in a region with a rich tradition in combat sports, Berinchyk was inspired by the success of local athletes and the vibrant sporting culture. His early fascination with boxing led him to join a local boxing gym, where he quickly displayed a natural talent for the sport. Berinchyk’s amateur career is distinguished by significant achievements on both national and international stages. His breakthrough came in 2011 when he competed in the World Amateur Boxing Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. Berinchyk delivered a series of impressive performances, defeating several formidable opponents to reach the final. The pinnacle of Berinchyk’s amateur career came in 2012 when he represented Ukraine at the London Olympics. Berinchyk made his professional debut on August 29, 2015, at the Sport Palace in Kyiv, Ukraine, where he secured a win against Tarik Madni by retirement in the fourth round. Over the next few years, Berinchyk amassed an unblemished record, consistently defeating opponents with a mix of technical prowess and power. Notable early victories included a unanimous decision win over Gyorgy Mizsei Jr. on December 12, 2015, and a TKO victory against Emiliano Martin Garcia on April 23, 2016. These wins helped him establish a strong foundation in the lightweight division.
Berinchyk’s career gained significant momentum when he captured the vacant WBO Oriental lightweight title by knocking out Allan Vallespin in the sixth round on December 16, 2017. He followed this achievement by winning the vacant WBO International lightweight title with a TKO victory over Rosekie Cristobal on December 22, 2018. Berinchyk successfully defended this title multiple times, showcasing his consistency and dominance. Notable defenses include victories over Nihito Arakawa on April 20, 2019, and Hector Edgardo Sarmiento on February 22, 2020, both by unanimous decision.
In December 2021, Berinchyk retained his WBO International lightweight title with a unanimous decision win over Isa Chaniev. The following year, on December 3, 2022, he added the European lightweight title to his collection by defeating Yvan Mendy at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, England. This victory further solidified his reputation as a top contender in the lightweight division. Berinchyk continued his winning streak in 2023, successfully defending his titles against Anthony Yigit on August 26 at Stadion Wrocław in Poland. His most significant achievement to date came on May 18, 2024, when he faced Emanuel Navarrete at Pechanga Arena in San Diego, California. In a closely contested bout, Berinchyk emerged victorious by split decision, capturing the vacant WBO lightweight title and cementing his status as a world champion.
