Hearn Outlines Joshua’s Next Three Fights
Joshua was close to winning all the belts in 2018 when he was in talks to face Deontay Wilder. Wilder had the last belt in the form of the WBC, but talks over a fight broke down. Wilder’s camp had made a $50 million offer, but the bout never went through after Hearn stated they had to accept the offer before a contract was sent.
The contract never arrived. Joshua would then lose his belts to Anthony Ruiz Jr. and Oleksandr Usyk. Wilder would lose his WBC belt to Tyson Fury. While the fight never happened, Joshua is close to getting another crack at winning all the belts. He is set to face Francis Ngannou on March 8. A victory takes Joshua closer to undisputed, with Hearn outlining the next move.
Hearn On Joshua
“The timing worked perfectly for AJ to stop Ngannou and for Fury to win. We appreciate there’s this fight and this rematch, but you know how things are going to go. You know how His Excellency moves. When the biggest fight in the history of the sport is in front of you to make, I’m sure he’ll find a way to keep everybody happy and make that fight, but it’s irrelevant right now. If AJ is triumphant, he will fight Filip Hrgovic for a world title, which is fine. Then we’ll fight the winner of Fury vs. Usyk,” Hearn said
Hearn is also trying to secure Conor Benn a massive fight with Gervonta Davis as doubts remain over the Brit’s star power. Following Benn’s two failed tests for Clomiphene, he has been left to fight outside the UK. The BBBofC and UKAD have appealed the National Anti-Doping Agency’s decision to remove Benn’s suspension.
This means he cannot fight in the UK until an appeal is ruled in his favor. That has left Benn with a possible fight with Davis in the US after Hearn confirmed an offer had been sent. Hearn has outlined other possible big names if that fight cannot be made.
Hearn On Benn
“Conor wants the biggest fights out there, and everybody is calling out his name. Eubank, I don’t see that happening. So, if he’s [Benn] fighting in the UK, it brings in Kell Brook and Liam Smith. Now, you’ve got the American guys calling him out. Errol Spence, Gervonta Davis, and we love the Mario Barrios fight. It’s probably our favorite, the WBC interim world champion [at welterweight]. He needs that big test, and that’ll bring out the best in him. That’ll be next,” Hearn stated
Nevertheless, that depends on Joshua and Benn continuing to win in style. Joshua’s win over Otto Wallin shows he is back to his best. But Benn’s wins over Rodolfo Orozco and Peter Dobson have been far from pleasant, showing he must rediscover the form he showed before his two failed VADA tests.
