Guerrero Seeks Title Fight With Jaron Ennis After Dominating Berto
Robert Guerrero is desperate to secure a fight with Jaron Ennis after his win over Andre Berto.
Guerrero had his first fight since his win over Victor Ortiz in 2021 as he came out of retirement to rematch Berto. The latter retired in 2018 after beating Devon Alexander as they ran things back. In the first fight, Guerrero won by unanimous decision, a feat which he repealed with the latest win. At 40, he has no plans of slowing down anytime soon.
Ennis is the current IBF welterweight champion, a feat he achieved after Terence Crawford was stripped. Guerrero is a former two-weight world champion, showing he has what it takes at the highest level. This includes the IBF featherweight title and the IBF junior lightweight title. While he has held interim belts at welterweight, Guerrero has yet to win a full world title. But that is the focus moving forward.
Guerrero On Ennis
“He [Boots] is a sharp, slick, smooth, and incredible fighter. That’s why he’s a champion. I feel great. Why not? He’s definitely as good as he says he is. It’s about getting that opportunity and showcasing it. I know he’s never been pressed hard. He’s always had guys that boxed in front of him, and he outguns them. I would love to get that fight if it happens. Talent-wise, he might be. It’s just a matter of him showcasing,” Robert Guerrero said
Nevertheless, the chances of that fight happening are very slim. A win over Guerrero does nothing for Ennis’ legacy. He is expected to win in such a match-up, meaning he would receive no credit for getting a win. In addition, it does nothing to take Ennis a step closer to unifying the 147 division.
A fight against Mario Barrios would make more sense since he is the WBC interim champion at 147, and he could become the full champion if Crawford is stripped or if he vacates the belts. Not only that, Guerrero’s comments may indicate that he is looking for one last big payday before he retires. Despite this, the boxer felt he was in a good place.
Guerrero On His Win
“I know that Berto has wanted his get-back on everybody, and he tried tonight. [And] I think I surprised him when I came out and boxed him. I think he thought that I was going to put pressure on him like I did the first time [in 2012] and bang with him. It seemed like every time we were on the ropes, that’s when he was on his game. Definitely. Bring him on down. Guerrero never shies away from any fight,” Guerrero stated
Ultimately, it all depends on whether Guerrero wants to fight for big paydays or if he has a desire to fight regardless. Further wins could put him in the conversation for bigger fights, but for him to jump straight into an Ennis clash is unlikely.
