George Kambosos Jr. Wants A ‘Statement Win’ Against Maxi Hughes

George Kambosos Jr. is looking to bounce back from his recent defeats against Devin Haney when he faces Maxi Hughes on July 22nd, 2023.

The former unified-lightweight champion had the biggest win of his career when he beat Teofimo Lopez to become the unified champion.

However, consecutive losses to Haney saw the Australian relinquish his titles to the eventual undisputed champion.

While that may have been the case, Kambosos has a chance to redeem his career. Victory over Hughes would propel Kambosos back to the forefront of the division.

“I had three mega fights in 11 months. I was able to sit back and reflect on things I was not doing right and become a better fighter.

“I’m sharper, more explosive, bigger and stronger. I’m excited to showcase myself on July 22. It will not be a win, but an emphatic statement,” Kambosos

Victory over Hughes could line up a fight with Shakur Stevenson or Vasiliy Lomachenko. Since both of those fighters are signed with Top Rank, along with Kambosos, Bob Arum may have several huge fights in-house.

In addition, a highly-anticipated rematch with Teofimo Lopez could take place despite the latter announcing his retirement.

Kambosos has expressed his intention to run it back, but this would most likely occur at 140 lbs following the ‘Takeover’s’ move up to super welterweight.

Not only that, there is also a chance that Haney could move up to junior welterweight. And if that were to happen, then the ‘Dream’s’ belts could end up being vacated.

Either way, Kambosos is ready to make it back to big time boxing.

“The plan is to do mega-fights again. I see myself making a great statement against Maxi Hughes. That’s my full focus and tunnel vision,” Kambosos

And yet, standing in Kambosos’ way is Hughes. The Brit is on a seven-fight-win streak including a victory over the former world champion Kid Galahad in his last fight.

However, the Brit has shown that at the top level, he has fallen just short. A loss to Liam Walsh for the WBO European Light vacant title saw the latter lose out via a unanimous decision.

Kambosos may be the favorite, but can he deliver?
