Edgar Berlanga Targeting A Fight With Canelo

Edgar Berlanga is confident that a fight with Canelo Alvarez can be made.

Berlanga’s intentions of facing Canelo were not clear following his unanimous-decision win over Jason Quigley. Instead, the star called out Jaime Munguia and Gennady Golovkin

While that may have been the case, the target has now changed. And yet, Canelo’s three-fight deal with the PBC threw a spanner in the works.

Prior to the deal, Canelo was fighting on DAZN which would have made such a fight easier since Berlanga was on the same network.

Instead, Canelo’s departure has resulted in a fight with Jermell Charlo on September 30th, 2023, which will see the two undisputed champions going head to head.

Despite this being the case, Berlanga is adamant that a fight can get done.

“They thinking that the Canelo thing is like dying out because he’s in PBC, but you know you got Canelo there that we can still make happen.

“Just because he went over to PBC with Al Haymon and signed for three fights, we got that power with my management and Eddie [Hearn]. We can definitely crossover with the network and possibly get a fight on Showtime PPV,” Berlanga

And yet, there could still be some hurdles to overcome. Canelo’s last two fights could end up being against David Benavidez and Errol Spence Jr, both bouts that would be more lucrative in nature.

In addition, the differences in the network could pose a problem. Despite Canelo having worked with DAZN and Matchroom, they do not have the best of relationships with the PBC.

And this was reflected in Hearn’s reaction to Leonard Ellerbe’s prior comments.

“He calls DAZN, the dead zone. He’s become a hater. He’s always talking about haters and how bad they are. Why would Leonard Ellerbe hate on a platform that is giving fighters an opportunity to make career high payday to box more often than they’ve ever box before. Ellerbe should know better. He should be actively encouraging DAZN to pay fighters more money” Hearn said

Nevertheless, if Canelo were to fight beyond his three-fight deal, then a Berlanga fight could happen. And given the huge fan base from both Mexico and America, the fight could have plenty of fireworks.
