Mayweather Retired After Sparring Haney

Floyd Mayweather retired after he sparred with Devin Haney in a competitive encounter.

That is according to Bill Haney. Mayweather’s last professional fight was in 2017 against Conor McGregor. The Notorious was stopped in the tenth round on his boxing debut. The victory was expected, but Mayweather’s decision to face a non-pro boxer may have been influenced after he sparred with Haney.

Bill’s comments were made after Ryan Garcia suggested Mayweather had shown him a clip of Gervonta Davis stopping Haney. Bill stressed that his son’s sparring with Mayweather showed Devin was the real deal.

Haney On Mayweather

“Floyd, he could have stopped [before fighting Conor McGregor in 2017], so we should have shown the sparring video of him and Devin. Now, why do all videos show the sparring [with Gervonta Davis] wasn’t close?

“It was like Floyd looked in the mirror when I told him. He finally decided he could no longer be in the boxing with no real fighters.Devin is the one [who showed Mayweather he was passed it]. He [Mayweather] knew that the torch had to be passed. I mean, he passed it to Devin because it was either that or we would be challenging him,” Bill stated

Mayweather’s previous comments showed he greatly respected Haney, as they had worked together in the boxing gym. But he has now been accused of helping Garcia dethrone Haney. The accusations first started when Mayweather was spotted jogging with Ryan.

Shortly after, Garcia pulled out of talks to face Haney in favor of Rolando Romero. Ryan described the decision as the better business move since Romero gave him a WBA Junior Welterweight Title in a less risky fight.

Haney vs Garcia

That would then allow Garcia to face Haney in what would have been a bigger unification since he holds the WBC Junior Welterweight Title. But that fight never happened as Romero signed a deal to take on Isaac Cruz. Garcia admitted Mayweather had influenced his mind as team Haney alleged everyone was against them.

“I’m in Vegas, I’m having a great time, I’m hanging out with Floyd… Floyd’s pretty influential, he’s like ‘why would you do that, why don’t you you fight Rolly for the belt and then fight Devin Haney?’… And then I made a quick decision, I said ‘Floyd, that makes sense, I’ll go get another belt,” Garcia said

“Bernard Floyd Ryan, all y’all get together ain’t none of that sh*t going to help on 4/20; it’s lit and everybody’s in it, and y’all going to pay for all the sh*t like Jay-Z says, ‘from all them years that you hold us’ yeah, you going to pay 4/20 is smoke, and we ain’t letting up,” Bill Haney replied

Mayweather has yet to respond to this, but given his boxing career, he has nothing to prove. He retired undefeated with a 50-0 record, which made him a five-division champion.

He beat the best fighters in his era, securing the biggest win of his career against Manny Pacquiao. But this is Haney’s chance to write his legacy. He became the youngest undisputed champion of the four-belt era when he won all the belts at 135 pounds. Beating Garcia adds another chapter to his legacy.
