De La Hoya’s Emotional Clap Back On Israel Vazquez’s Cancer Fight – ‘Support Our Brother’
Oscar De La Hoya touched upon boxer Israel Vazquez, who is suffering from terminal cancer, in a passionate ‘Clap Back Thursday’ edition.
De La Hoya touched on several topics, ranging from Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson to his 5 v 5 with Eddie Hearn. He criticized Paul for boxing the 58-year-old Tyson, as he hoped ‘Iron Mike’ would knock him out via an uppercut. He also called out Eddie Hearn’s reluctance to make Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs. Jaron Ennis after reports talks were underway. He understood the reservations based on Ennis’ last performance against Karen Chukhadzhian. Despite getting the win, Boots looked far from impressive. However, the key segment touched upon Vazquez’s illness.
Vazquez’s Career
The Mexican is one of the most respected champions to come out of his country. He boxed between 1995 and 2010, ending his career with a 44-5 record, with 32 wins by knockout. His last fight was against Rafael Marquez where he suffered a loss. He ended his career as a three-time super bantamweight world champion. He picked up the IBF, WBC and The Ring titles twice during this period.
But he has now been diagnosed with stage 4 sarcoma.
The WBC came out to show solidarity with the boxer, saying they were working with his family to ensure he gets the medical help he requires: “Our beloved champion has received a devastating diagnosis. The WBC is by his side, supporting in every way possible,” WBC said. His family has also started a GoFundMe to raise as much money as possible. The current target is $75,000, and they have raised over $30,000 and counting.
“WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman is on Team Vazquez. You can be too! Our beloved champion has received a devastating cancer diagnosis. The WBC is at his side, attempting to bring in his family from Mexico and making sure he gets the care he deserves. But he needs your love and support, too. Show this humble and courageous warrior what he means to you. With a dollar, a prayer and a note to his family. One of the most compelling and compassionate boxers of all times needs your help. There’s no time to waste. Stand in his corner, now,” GoFundMe
Now, De La Hoya has urged others to get involved.
De La Hoya Reacts
“I wanted to call out all the entire boxing community to support our fellow brother Israel Vazquez. He has terminal cancer and needs our help. His entire family started a GoFundMe a week ago, and they’ve managed to raise almost $25,000 of his $75,000 goal. Are you telling me there aren’t 50 of us in boxing who could give a few $1,000 each really, come on now.
“I will double the current money raised and contribute $25,000 myself. And I’m calling on everyone in the boxing world to come together and step up and donate the final $25,000 that’s needed to get their goal. All the money that fighters and managers are making these days, Come on, dig into your pockets and help. Making videos, wishing Israel well is very nice, but actions speak louder than words,” De La Hoya
