De La Hoya Blasts Marquez Over Stealing Accusations - 'You’re Broke'

Oscar De La Hoya slammed Juan Manuel Marquez, who accused the Golden Boy Promoter of stealing money from him.

Marquez had a successful career in the sport, becoming a four-weight world champion. Golden Boy played a part in his rise, as Marquez became one of the best Mexican fighters in the sport. He had iconic fights with Manny Pacquiao, as he knocked out the Filipino in their fourth fight. However, things have now turned sour between Marquez and De La Hoya. He called out De La Hoya for stealing money and amending the terms of his fight with Pacman once it became clear he would not renew with Golden Boy.

Marquez On De La Hoya

“He says, ‘I see you’re not renewing. We want 20% of your earnings from the Pacquiao fight.’ They accused me of stealing from them. They called me a thief. I told Oscar, sure, 20%? No problem. In my mind, I thought, yeah [right], I’ll give it after you stole from me for five years? … I don’t care if he hears this. Let him know. He tried to charge me a percentage for the Pacquiao fight,” Marquez said

This is not the first time De La Hoya has been accused of this. Canelo Alvarez claimed that Oscar attempted to steal money from him. This reportedly became clear when Canelo did an audit. It all came to a head at the Jaime Munguia presser, where Canelo said his bit. Oscar denied doing anything of the sort, later suing Canelo for defamation.

Munguia would eventually leave De La Hoya after Canelo beat him, with suggestions that Canelo’s comments may have influenced the Mexican. Now, Oscar has responded with strong words against those making comments about his company.

De La Hoya Reacts

“And what makes this worse is that before you were a boxer you were an accountant but you still couldn’t handle your own finances. Listen, dude, I’m sorry you’re broke, but how you spend your money is not my problem. I have always paid everyone exactly what they are contracted and entitled to.

“Juan, let’s be honest, you only heard this because you heard Canelo defame me at the press conference in May … I hate to see former fighters end up like this, it’s sad and pathetic. But slandering me is only going to get you in trouble, dude. So keep my name out of your…mouth,” De La Hoya stated

Despite those remarks, Golden Boy is still one of the leading promoters out there. They are now working closely with the Saudis, helping Riyadh Season to put on the Vergil Ortiz vs. Serhii Bohachuk fight in the US. It was a thrilling fight as Ortiz Jr. got off the canvas twice before securing a majority decision. There are also reports the Saudis could buy a stake in Golden Boy as part of their wider plans for a Saudi Boxing League. De La Hoya’s company continues to go from strength to strength even in light of those claims.
