Dana White Hints At A Move Into Boxing – ‘There Will Be Some Big Announcements’
Dana White teased a big announcement that could see him enter the world of boxing.
The CEO of the UFC has long been linked with making inroads into the sport. However, he has refrained from doing so, as his main focus has been making the UFC the world’s biggest combat sports brand. He has managed to achieve that, as the UFC is coming off a successful UFC 306 event. It featured Sean O’Malley and Merab Dvalishvili in the headline event. It was the first combat sports event at the arena, making history in the process, as Dvalishvili won to become the UFC Bantamweight Champion.
White’s UFC Brand
The event also produced a live gate record of $22 million, capping off a historic moment for The UFC. The event also followed another successful card this year at UFC 300. The card was capped off by successful fights, such as Max Holloway stopping Justin Gaethje with a second left to go in the fight. Meanwhile, Alex Pereira knocked out Jamahal Hill in the first round to retain his UFC Lightweight Title.
But now White could turn his attention towards boxing. He has a close relationship with the Saudis and Turki Alalshikh, who have invested significant money in boxing. Reports indicate that the Saudis want to make a boxing league which could mirror the UFC model. The UFC has centralized its operations, allowing fans to see the biggest fights possible. While White has been linked with boxing for some time, he has never entered it. But now that could be about the change, as he teased an announcement.
White On Boxing
“There will be some big announcements soon. I never say anything I don’t do, ever. We’ve been kicking the whole boxing thing around for a long time, but you’ve never heard me commit and say, ‘I’m in.’ I’m in,” White said
One boxer who caught White’s interest has been Irishman Callum Walsh. He will fight on Friday at the 3Arena in Dublin. White sees him as a rising prospect. He has been pictured with Walsh on numerous occasions and attended his fights in Boston and Los Angeles.
Walsh stopped Przemyslaw Runowski in his first fight on home soil, putting the pressure on him to deliver in front of his home fans. Walsh stopped him and took his undefeated record to 13-0 to retain his WBC Continental Americas Super Welterweight Title. When White was asked about Walsh’s fighting style, he had nothing but praise for him.
“I love Callum Walsh. I love his style. [And] I love the fact that this kid was fighting really tough guys already at six fights [into his career]. He’s willing to take tough fights, and I just liked the kid personally as soon as I was introduced to him. Promoting him is fun for me, and I am having fun doing it,” White said
