Class-Action Lawsuit Hits Netflix Over Paul vs. Tyson Streaming Problems

Netflix has suffered a significant setback after reports it has been sued over its Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson streaming issues, which made the bout ‘unwatchable.’

Paul defeated Tyson in a unanimous decision, making it a record-breaking event. 108 million viewers watched the fight, as it was the most streamed boxing bout ever. The fight earned Paul a reported $40 million. Meanwhile, Tyson picked up $20 million. Since both fighters made it out of the ring in one piece, it was a successful event.

“The Paul-Tyson fight garnered an estimated average minute audience1 (AMA) of 108 million live viewers globally from opening to closing bell and continued to drive viewing into the weekend with an estimated AMA of 125 million (Live+1).

“The Taylor-Serrano fight averaged an estimated 74 million live viewers globally and became the most-watched professional women’s sports event in US history with 47 million AMA in the US,” Neftlix record

But beneath those numbers lies another story. Numerous fans experienced issues with the streaming, noting buffering issues. Now, one man has decided to take action. Reports indicate that Ronald Denton from Florida has issued a class-action lawsuit. The filing allegedly states that Netflix violated their contract, arguing that there were ‘deceptive’ measures involved. It is further claimed that fans “were faced with legendary problems, including no access, streaming glitches, and buffering issues.”

A class-action lawsuit has been filed, which would enable other customers who have suffered to come forward. It is claimed that more than 100,000 people made complaints over the fight. Deton stresses that Netflix had a responsibility to their customers. The filing includes a request for an unspecified amount of damages. Billy Howard, a consumer attorney, is charged with this case.

Reaction

“Netflix customers experienced massive streaming issues and should have known better because it’s happened before. Instead of providing the programming its viewers pay for every month, Netflix was completely unprepared and unable to fix the issues,” Complainant’s filing

“[Netflix] didn’t produce anything. Some people did not get to watch the fight. Period. End of story. Most people saw part of it. And that’s why we have juries in our country. What is that worth? Is it worth, you know, enough money to go buy a purple Lamborghini? Probably not. But it’s worth getting your money back. It’s worth something for the problems that you went through,” Billy Howard

“This unprecedented scale created many technical challenges, which the launch team tackled brilliantly by prioritizing stability of the stream for the majority of viewers. I’m sure many of you have seen the chatter in the press and on social media about the quality issues. We don’t want to dismiss the poor experience of some members, and know we have room for improvement, but still consider this event a huge success,” Netflix said
