Chris Eubank Jr. Overcame ‘Demons’ To Beat Liam Smith

Chris Eubank Jr. has opened up on the difficulties that he had to overcome to secure a win over Liam Smith.

Eubank stopped Smith in the tenth round, having secured two knockdowns in the fight, to pull off a masterful performance. Eubank’s increased workrate and a menacing jab set up his combinations, as Smith had no answer to what was coming his way.

Although Smith’s performance was impacted by what appeared to be an ankle injury, Eubank also had a few share of his own problems to overcome.

Eubank On His Struggles

He expanded on how he had to prove the doubters wrong, with suggestions that his career could have been over with another loss.

Meanwhile, there were also doubts about the decision to hire Brian McIntyre. After all, it was hard to see what McIntyre could have done in a short space of time.

In addition, Eubank had seen a mega fight split through his hands through no fault of his own. The fight with Conor Benn was called off after he failed two VADA tests for Clomiphene. And a defeat against Smith could have ended that fight for good even if Benn does box once again.

Eubank’s Comments

“I had to fight some demons. There were a lot of things to prove. People were saying I was shot. People were saying I don’t have it anymore and that I’m too old. That my punch resistance had gone. I had to live with that for six months knowing it wasn’t true. That was tough.

“I’m not gonna lie, what happened tonight was supposed to happen in January. It just wasn’t my night. I trained hard for that fight and I trained hard for this fight,” Eubank

However, Chris’ win showed that he still does have something to offer in his career. And given that he is 33-years-old, the time to secure the big fights is now.

So the question moving forward will be is this a new Eubank, or was the win a one-off? Time will tell.
