Benn Hits Out At BBBofC Chief And Chris Algieri – ‘I Believe In Karma’

In some recent boxing news, Conor Benn has spoken about his recent comeback and the controversy that has been surrounding it.

Benn returned to secure a unanimous-decision win over Rodolfo Orozco on September 23rd, 2023. The narrative heading into the fight was whether Benn should have been fighting in the first place.

Despite having his suspension lifted from the National Anti-Doping Agency, UKAD and the British Boxing Board of Control have appealed the decision.

Reports stress that Benn’s defense does nothing to show if Clomiphene was in his system. It is reportedly based on jurisdiction as to whether UKAD can enforce VADA findings.

In response, Robert Smith, the chief of the BBBofC, did state that Benn had not cleared his name. And now Benn has had his say.

Benn On Smith

“It gets no one nowhere. But I’ll fight this tooth and nail. I’ll spend every penny I’ve ever earned in this boxing game to prove my innocence, no problem, and I stand by that. Money comes and goes, but my name stays – my name remains. I’ve made a lot of sacrifices and I’m willing to cooperate. Bearing in mind all the injustice; bearing in mind the way I’ve been treated, I’m still willing to sit down with them. I have nothing to hide,” Benn

Benn’s criticism was not just reserved to Smith. The boxer also responded to the news of Chris Algieri being pulled from the DAZN commentary for his fight.

Benn had knocked out Algieri in 2021. But once the news over Benn’s failed tests emerged, the American spoke of rumors over Benn perhaps taking substances.

Although there is no explanation as to why Algieri was removed from the commentary team, Benn made his opinion on the former boxer very clear.

Benn On Algieri

“Putting it bluntly, I think he’s a sore loser who can’t accept the fact that he got knocked out by someone so inexperienced [in 2021]. I can understand it’s a bitter pill to swallow, but when you play cards like, “I heard rumours…” – of course someone who got knocked out as bad as he got knocked out would say that. Was it fair that he got pulled off? If that was the case – this is the first time I’m hearing this – I wasn’t aware. I believe in karma, and he obviously got what was coming to him, but I would never have any influence of taking him off the show,” Benn

Ultimately, until Benn clears his name with the authorities, there will still be question marks over his future moving forward. And that will be important if the boxer is to be accepted back into the public fold.

After all, his fanbase is in the UK. But as of now, the boxer is not allowed to fight in the UK. And that will only damage his brand moving forward.

This is particularly since a Chris Eubank Jr. is only marketable fight in the UK. And there is not getting away from that. Find all the latest boxing news and MMA breaking updates on boxingblitz.
