Benavidez Wants Canelo But Will Face David Morrell Jr. If It Doesn’t Happen

In today’s boxing news, David Benavidez has called for Canelo Alvarez to face him rather than taking a bout with Terence Crawford.

The comments were in response to Alvarez’s recent win over Jermall Charlo. The Mexican dominated the the latter, who had moved up two weight classes in order to try and become undisputed at 168.

However, the manner in which Alvarez dominated was telling. The American was dropped in the seventh round and despite Derrick James’ insistence on increasing his output, Charlo appeared more focused on trying to avoid getting stopped.

In the aftermath, there were suggestions that Crawford could face Canelo. However, this would require Bud to jump up three weight classes in order to make it happen. And given Charlo’s performance, Benavidez was not too keen on seeing it happen.

Benavidez On Canelo

“To be honest with you, I don’t wanna see that. We’ve already seen what happened when he fought somebody [from] 154 [Jermell Charlo]. So, what is gonna happen when he fights somebody [from] 147? I respect Crawford a lot, but I don’t wanna see a 147-pounder fight a 168-pounder. I understand Crawford is a great fighter and he wants to go up to 168 to fight Canelo. But if you ask somebody at 112 pounds to come up and fight Canelo, they’ll go up to fight Canelo. You know what I mean? So, it’s just basically everybody wants the fight,” Benavidez said

Those comments are understandable since Benavidez has been a mandatory for over a year. And given that the WBC interim champion has talked about moving up to 175 pounds, the time left to put on a mega fight between the pair is diminishing.

But before that can happen, Benavidez must overcome Demetrius Andrade on November 25th, 2023. And provided that he does, the calls for the fight will only increase.

“But, you know, we as fans deserve competitive fights. You know what I mean? And that’s why I feel like Canelo doesn’t wanna fight me right now, because he knows it’s the most competitive fight. And I’m working like an animal in the gym, so that’s why he knows,” Benavidez stated

Benavidez On Morrell Jr.

Despite this being the case, it appears that Canelo is keen on fighting Jaime Munguia. Reports indicate that Alvarez could face the undefeated Mexican, with a view to then fighting Benavidez in the summer.

And yet, there is no guarantee that Alvarez would then face the Mexican Monster. And if that were to be the case, the WBC interim champion has lined up a fight with David Morrell Jr. instead.

“I think it is a competitive fight because Munguia, you can say what you want about him, but he has heart. He’s going to keep fighting until he gets knocked out or the fight ends. So, it’s going to be a good fight. I think it’s going to be a little tougher than people think it’s going to be for Canelo because Munguia is a tough guy. He just keeps coming back, but ultimately, Canelo stops him with a body shot. If that fight [Canelo] doesn’t happen, then I’m going to fight David Morrell and then just try to pick up another belt because my end goal is to try and get all four belts,” Benavidez
