Wilder Vs. Parker Breakdown

Deontay Wilder is the heavy favourite in his fight with Joseph Parker this Saturday on the ‘Day of Reckoning’ card.

It is unheard of to see Wilder fight on the co-main event, but such is the talent at disposal that Anthony Joshua and Otto Wallin were given the nod instead to headline the event. The Bronze Bomber’s knockout capabilities are well known. His 43 wins include 42 by stoppage.

His only losses have been against Tyson Fury. But he is facing a man who is a sparring partner to the Gypsy King. But that is not only Parker’s claim to fame. He is a former WBO heavyweight champion, a title he would then lose to Anthony Joshua. Let us take a look at what we can expect in the fight.

Parker

Parker faces the challenge of outboxing Wilder, even if the Bronze Bomber is not the most technically gifted fighter. The main reason is that Parker must stay focused for the entire fight to avoid Wilder’s right hand. But the heavyweight is not known for having quick reflexes and athleticism, which will be critical in a 12-round fight to avoid the power and win on points.

The strategy of boxing on the back foot and then hitting on occasion failed to work for Luis Ortiz, as he eventually got hit and stopped. But fighting on the inside is also tough. Fury is the only boxer to have done it, but in doing so, he had to get off the canvas on more than one occasion. Seeing Parker do the same is unlikely, given that he has been stopped after Joe Joyce got him out in the 11th round.

Parker’s boxing skills are not on par with Oleksandr Usyk, who was able to neutralise Joshua and negate his power to win two fights on the spin. Fighting on the inside is his best bet rather than trying to survive and box at range. Wilder has not dealt with the Fury style in over a year. The American’s last win was over Robert Helenius which was a first-round KO. So there are still question marks over whether Wilder has developed his game since then.

Wilder

Wilder will make his opponent come in on the inside, having them reach and counter them with the right hand. But if Parker closes the distance, he can reduce Wilder’s power. The American will not have time to unwind his power punch.

If he can implement that by clinching on the inside and leaning on Wilder, it could become an ugly fight, much to Parker’s advantage. But the difference between Parker and Fury is that the latter has the physical advantages. He also changed his style from a boxer to a power puncher after working with SugarHill Steward. So Parker must get that balance right to come out victorious.

Comments

“Joseph Parker ran from me because he seen what I did to Gerald Washington. And, you know, he came to talk a good game and talk about, you know, fighting me or whatever, just like all the other ones. And he seen, you know, the performance I had by knocking Gerald Washington out, and he [fled], he ran, just like all the other ones. I always say many times I was supposed to unify the division many, many years ago, if I had the opportunity,” Wilder said

“Everybody is talking about his power and how dangerous he is, but they’re forgetting what I can do in the ring. I don’t care what they say. I’m going to go out and put on the performance that I can. It’s just another fight. Every heavyweight has power. If you land the right punch at the right time, you can knock anyone out. It’s just another fight. He’s had his time. I just feel this fight here, this is my time to shine,” Parker stated
