Tommy Fury Is In Talks To Face Roy Jones Jr.

Tommy Fury is reportedly in talks to face Roy Jones Jr. in an exhibition fight.

The news arrives in the aftermath of his win over KSI on October 14th, 2023. During the course of that process, Fury was granted a unanimous-decision win that divided many in the boxing community. In a fight that was devoid of much action, some in the boxing community felt that KSI had been hard done by. The Youtuber responded by calling the decision a ‘robbery,’ as his team sought to appeal the decision. Prior to that, however, Fury beat Jake Paul via a split decision.

The choice of opponents clearly showed that the boxer’s intentions were to face fighters in the influencer sphere as opposed to fighting for a genuine world title. And the news linking Fury with a fight against Jones would sump that up. The latter is 54 years old, and he retired from the sport in 2018 following his win over Scott Sigmon.

Thereafter, Jones had an exhibition against Mike Tyson. That was followed up by an official fight against Anthony Pettis, which ended in a majority-decision defeat. But given that Roy Jones is such a big name, Fury was keen on facing a legend of the sport.

Fury On Roy Jones

“We’re speaking to Roy Jones Jr; we can do something with him. I’m giving it some thought at the time of speaking. Roy Jones Jr is a great guy. He’s a lovely fella, a standup man, and a hall-of-fame great. Yeah, maybe it is an exhibition or something, whatever he wants to do. We’ve not really spoken in great detail, but he did say over in Saudi ‘Let’s do something’ and we’re all ears. We just need to sit down and see what is best for Tommy and Roy Jones Jr,” Fury said

Outside of a fight with Jones, a rematch with Jake Paul has been talked about. The latter is set to face Andre August on December 15th, 2023. That will be Paul’s second fight that has resulted in him facing a professional boxer. And provided that he comes through with a win, that could result in the Fury rematch playing out.

The latter has indicated his desire to run things back, especially since Paul did make it a competitive fight to some degree. The ‘Problem Child’ managed to drop Fury with his jab, which became the highlight of the fight. And since it was a split-decision win, the result could have arguably gone another way on a different day. In response to the rematch, Paul remarked the following:

Paul On Fury

“It’s gonna happen. It’s gonna happen for sure. I think it was a great fight, it was entertaining, it was the biggest pay-per-view buys of boxing for the last two years. So, I think we have to run it back and Tommy’s down, so I’m excited for that,” Paul stated

While boxing does get accused of not putting on the biggest fights, influencer boxing is continuing to bring in a new audience. And if that can result in fighters securing big paydays in a sport where lives are on the line, then that can only be a good thing.
