Teofimo Unhappy With Reynoso - 'I Won’t Be Training With Eddy'

Teofimo Lopez has hit out at Eddy Reynoso for not being in his corner for his upcoming fight against Arnold Barboza Jr.

Lopez defends his WBO Junior Welterweight Title for the first time since joining with Reynoso. The latter’s stable has many big names, such as Ryan Garcia and Canelo. Alvarez fights on May 3, a day after Lopez has his fight. That gave Reynoso a choice to make. They are both title fights, but Canelo’s is bigger since he fights for the Undisputed Super Middleweight Belt.

Canelo has also been with Reynoso for a longer time, putting him ahead of the pecking order. Lopez is a two-weight and two-time lineal champion, making him one of the most accomplished fighters in the sport. However, the problem he faces is that he struggles to sell out. Canelo showed his pulling power when he sold 650,000 PPVs and produced a live gate of $17 million against Edgar Berlanga in a fight which was not the biggest from a resume point of view. Lopez still had plenty to say, as he was unhappy by the absence of his trainer.

Lopez Reacts

“I got news for you guys. I won’t be training with them [Eddy Reynoso].  [And] I was looking forward to leaving tomorrow for camp with them. Maybe they don’t feel I’m focused, which is pretty interesting. It could be a lot of things. Just the time frame. Maybe it could the promoting. Eddy Reynoso really didn’t elaborate and speak to my father. I don’t know if I did something wrong. If it was me or, they’re just focused on their self. They [Team Canelo] have that Saudi trip they’re going to be taking in a couple of weeks, and with a fighter like myself that is elite, maybe they need more time.

“It doesn’t make sense. Whatever the case may be, we love them, we appreciate them. I appreciate having that time with him [Eddy Reynoso] from that experience a little bit. It won’t be the end of our story with them. They’re just on tunnel vision right now. We’ll see. Am I disappointed about it? Yeah, I am, but I take it as competition. I don’t think they would have put me on co-main with Canelo Alvarez. I think they would have put me underneath Munguia. He’s a great fighter, but not Teofimo,” Lopez said

Nevertheless, Lopez must stay focused on the task at hand. A win means he could take on Jaron Ennis after reports that a fight could happen next if Boots beats Eimantas Stanionis. The latter two face each other in a unification in April. Lopez would have to move up to 147, giving him the chance to become a three-weight champion. There are also possible fights against Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia, who also fight on the same card as Lopez. Teo can only secure more wins to justify himself as the main man, who should get priority.
