Surace Shocks Munguia With A Sixth-Round KO

Bruno Surace got off the canvas to knock out Jaime Munguia in the sixth round in a massive upset win

It was the second defeat of Munguia’s career, as Surace took his undefeated record to 26-0-2. Munguia was feeling confident coming into the fight. In his pre-fight comments, he said he had studied Surace. He also vowed to punish his opponent with a knockout. Since Surace only had four knockouts prior to this, Munguia may have overlooked his man.

“[Surace] is a strong fighter, he throws a lot of combinations. I’ve studied him, and I’m confident of the work that we have done. I will walk away with my hand raised in victory. It’s a big weight on my shoulders to fight in this stadium in front of all my people. It’s going to fill me with a lot of emotions. But I have to control that and do an intelligent fight. And I’m prepared to do that and give a great show to the people,” Munguia said

It was a cagey opener, with the two fighters trying to work each other out. Munguia was aiming to use his feints and keep Surace guessing by moving forward. In a round with very little action, Surace resorted to fighting on the back foot. But the second round produced the first big moment of the fight. Surace got through Munguia’s defense with a right hand. But Munguia responded with a left hook to drop his man. Surace got up from the canvas, only for Munguia to attack the body, as he landed with a right hand.

Munguia Drops Surace

Munguia continued with the body attack in the third. However, Surace found his composure as he covered up on the ropes. He landed a left hook to keep Munguia at bay. Munguia was trying to break his man down with a left hook to the body in the fourth. Surace caught Munguia slacking by landing an uppercut once Munguia got in range. Munguia’s momentum had slowed down with Surace getting a better read on his opponent’s punches. He also landed a four-punch combination to trouble Munguia in the fifth.

Then, out of nowhere, Surace caused a major upset. The Frenchman was backed up on the ropes. Munguia let fly with a combination. But as he did so, his left hand was low. Surace connected with a huge counter right to drop Munguia. Munguia could not beat the count, giving Surace a massive win. He could now face Cristian Mbilli next after the WBC had ordered him to face Munguia in a WBC Interim Super Middleweight Title clash.
