Spence Teases A Comeback

Errol Spence Jr. has teased a return, as fans could see him make a comeback soon.

Spence’s career is in limbo following his defeat against Terence Crawford last year. He suffered the first loss of his career after he was dropped three times on his way to a ninth-round stoppage defeat. He missed out on becoming the first Undisputed Welterweight Champion of the four-belt era. Spence also never got the opportunity to gain his revenge as talks over the rematch broke down. Spence would then have cataract surgery on his right eye. He said his vision was compromised in the Crawford bout. Spence also had two car crashes before the Crawford fight.

“A lot of people take it lightly just because I came back and fought and all that but that’s serious stuff. It’s not too many people that go high speed in a Ferrari and get thrown from a Ferrari, land on solid concrete and still be here to talk today, still survive, still be coherent and everything.  That was traumatic and a brutal experience,” Spence said

Spence’s Troubles

But things did not get any easier. Spence parted ways with his trainer, Derrick James. James also responded by filing a lawsuit against Spence for unpaid wages in relation to the Crawford bout. During his time out of the ring, Spence has also explored other ventures.

“But I like the promoter side. I feel like it might be my calling a little bit, being a promoter and looking at the young guys coming up and helping them get to the top of their level, because that’s where we at right now. He [Martin]’s at the top right now, and once he’s at the top, you’re the man,” Spence said

He has signed Frank Martin under his management company as he was on hand to promote the fighter when he took Gervonta Davis. While Martin came up short in that fight, Spence admitted that he enjoyed the experience of exploring the promotional side of the boxing game. Spence has been linked with a fight against the WBC and WBO Junior Middleweight Champion Sebastian Fundora.

Spence Reacts

Fundora secured the belts after beating Tim Tszyu in a split decision in March. In his post-fight comments, he was joined by Spence in the ring. Spence indicated that he wanted the Fundora fight next. No official date has been confirmed, but Fundora has said on more than one occasion that it interests him. A win over Fundora would make Spence a two-weight world champion and a unified champion at 154 pounds. It also opens the door for a rematch with Crawford, who has the WBA belt, if Bud wants to become undisputed in a third weight class. Fans can expect an announcement soon.

Nevertheless, there is also a risk with Spence coming back. There is an argument he should have a tune-up first before facing the big names. Fundora is a tall southpaw who packs a punch. Given the extensive damage that Spence suffered in the last fight, he has to make the best decision for his career. He is financially secure and not in desperate need to ever fight again. That is what makes Spence’s next move intriguing.
