Tim Tszyu, born on November 2, 1994, in Sydney, Australia, hails from a family deeply entrenched in boxing royalty. As the son of former world champion Kostya Tszyu, Tim was exposed to the sport from a young age, inheriting both the skill and passion that would shape his own boxing journey.
Tszyu’s amateur career began in earnest as he sought to carve out his own path in the sport, separate from his father’s illustrious legacy. Starting in 2011, Tszyu competed in various amateur tournaments, steadily building his experience and honing his craft. He quickly garnered attention for his natural talent, combining technical proficiency with raw power in the ring.
One of the notable highlights of Tszyu’s amateur career came in 2015 when he represented Australia at the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Doha, Qatar. Competing in the welterweight division, Tszyu faced tough international competition, showcasing his skills on the global stage and earning respect among his peers.
Throughout his amateur tenure, Tszyu faced a diverse array of opponents, each encounter serving as a stepping stone in his development as a boxer. His dedication to the sport and relentless pursuit of excellence earned him accolades and recognition within the Australian boxing community.
Tszyu’s amateur career culminated in numerous achievements and milestones, laying the groundwork for his eventual transition to the professional ranks. With each bout, he demonstrated an unwavering commitment to his craft, setting the stage for a promising future in the world of boxing.
Professional Career
Tim Tszyu, after a four-year hiatus from boxing due to a hand injury, made a triumphant return to the ring in December 2016. His professional debut occurred at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground where he secured a unanimous decision victory against Zorran Cassidy. This marked the beginning of a promising professional career for Tszyu.
By his seventh professional bout, Tszyu had clinched the WBC-ABCO Continental light-middleweight title with a unanimous decision over Wade Ryan, signaling his rising prominence in the light-middleweight division. In November 2019, Tszyu further bolstered his reputation with a technical knockout of Jack Brubaker in just the fourth round.
Tszyu’s ascent continued as he faced former WBO welterweight champion Jeff Horn on August 26, 2020, at the Queensland Country Bank Stadium. Dominating the fight, Tszyu achieved an eighth-round corner stoppage, solidifying his status as a formidable contender. On March 31, 2021, ranked highly across several boxing organizations, Tszyu knocked out Dennis Hogan in the fifth round. His subsequent bouts included a third-round TKO victory over Steve Spark and a decisive unanimous decision win against a resilient Takeshi Inoue, where Tszyu won on all scorecards by a wide margin.
Tszyu’s American debut came against 2012 Olympian Terrell Gausha at The Armory in Minneapolis. Despite an early knockdown, Tszyu showcased resilience and skill to secure a unanimous decision victory. This victory set the stage for his next significant challenge.
On March 12, 2022, Tszyu fought Tony Harrison for the WBO interim junior middleweight title in Australia, securing the title with a ninth-round TKO. He defended this title with a stunning 77-second knockout against Carlos Ocampo on June 18, 2023. Following the elevation of Jermell Charlo to face Canelo Alvarez, Tszyu was elevated to full WBO light-middleweight champion.
Tszyu’s recent bout against Sebastian Fundora, a replacement for the injured Keith Thurman, took place on March 30, 2024, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
