Sonnen Eyes Masvidal After The Anderson Silva Draw

Chael Sonnen wants to box Jorge Masvidal following his draw with Anderson Silva.

Sonnen faced Silva for a third time in a boxing bout. His previous two fights came in MMA, losing on both occasions. Silva won at UFC 117 via a unanimous decision. Meanwhile, the rematch at UFC 148 ended in a second-round KO. While Sonnen did not win this time, he felt he had done enough to get a decision. Now, the attention is on getting a fight with Masvidal.

Sonnen On Masvidal

“Masvidal’s a little bit overrated, in all fairness, within his own mind,” Sonnen said. “I can’t remember the last time that he won a fight. He gave me a threat, he said, ‘I won’t even use my right hand. I’ll put that in the contract.’ I’m like, ‘OK, stupid, put that in the contract. I didn’t ask for that, but go ahead and put that in there.’

“Then he talks about, ‘I’m going to pay you $10 million.’ Well, I didn’t ask for $10 million, but again, stupid, put that in the contract. Just keep talking. It just keeps getting worse for Jorge Masvidal. There’s some people you play with, there’s some people you don’t; put me in the category of ‘don’t.’ Do not challenge me unless you want to fight me,” Sonnen said

That all depends on Masvidal’s next fight. He takes on Nate Diaz in a boxing bout on July 6. It is a rematch of their UFC 244 fight in 2019. Masvida won the fight to become the first BMF Champion. But the fight ended on a dour note, as it was stopped at the end of round three following a cut over Diaz’s right eye. Masvidal and Diaz have boxed once before, meaning they are still relatively new to the sport.

Silva Reacts

Diaz lost on his boxing debut against Jake Paul last year. While he made it to the final bell, he had to get off the canvas. Masvidal secured a majority decision win over Joseph Benjamin. However, this was back in 2005, showing that the win will play very little in the fight. Sonnen’s preparation is not the best. He previously said he rejected a $2 million offer to fight Mike Tyson. Tyson will now take on Jake Paul on November 15. That would have provided Sonnen with valuable experience. His fight with Silva was criticized after knockouts were ruled out, keeping it an exhibition.

“It was an exhibition match, and as an exhibition match, it wasn’t allowed knockouts, it was a match with no [winner]. It was an exhibition and I believe we put on a good show. I have a [boxing] match in Dubai that isn’t an exhibition. There’s no date yet. We’re negotiating, and I can’t say who the opponent is yet or [my manager] will kill me because the contract is in secrecy. It’s another big challenge in my life. A big challenge, indeed,” Silva said
