Jorge Masvidal Vs. Nate Diaz Boxing Bout In the Works

A Jorge Masvidal vs Nate Diaz boxing bout has reportedly been made for March.

Masvidal announced he was coming out of retirement, with speculation mounting over who he could face next. There were suggestions that the timing meant a return at UFC 300 was on the cards.

Ben Askren expressed his desire to rematch Masvidal after suffering the fastest UFC knockout loss in history. That appeared unlikely as Jake Paul leaked Masvidal’s next opponent on social media by suggesting it was Nate Diaz. The ‘Problem Child’ deleted the social media post, as Masvidal failed to comment. But now it seems it is very likely. That is according to Josh Thomson.

Masvidal Vs. Diaz

“There’s just no way in any avenue I can see this fight coming to fruition. Whether the [Justin] Gaethje fight or the Leon [Edwards] fight, not only because he’s coming off four losses, but on top of that, like I said, he’s- I feel like he’s scheduled to fight, if it doesn’t happen it doesn’t happen, but from what I’m hearing, that fight’s supposed to happen February 28th against Nate Diaz. In a boxing match, so if that fight happens, the UFC’s not gonna bank on their main event or their co-main-event against Leon Edwards against Jorge Masvidal, knowing that he fights two or three weeks before,” Thomson said

Those comments have been clarified by further reports.

Diaz and Masvidal’s only meeting occurred at UFC 244. During that fight, Masvidal beat Diaz to get the BMF title. Both men have had boxing bouts. Masvidal secured a win over Joseph Benjamin back in 2005. Diaz, however, has fought much more recently. He faced Jake Paul last August but suffered a unanimous decision loss.

But if there is also a chance that Masvidal makes a UFC 300 return. Chael Sonnen expects it to only happen for a Justin Gaethje fight. Gaethje is the current BMF champion after knocking out Dustin Poirier in the second round at UFC 291 to win the belt. Masvidal was the pioneer of the belt, being the first person to get it. That is why Sonnen felt a Gaetheje fight could happen.

“There’s a one in a million chance that he goes back [to the UFC]. That would have to be him versus [Justin] Gaethje at [170 lbs] for the BMF [title]. The only way you could make up for his retirement or that you could make up for the discrepancy within records is if you spot him the weight and you move Gaethje to 170 and you make it for a ‘BMF. I know Masvidal is not going to fight in the UFC ever again, and that it is not his choice unless it’s at 300 for the belt against Gaethje,” Sonnen stated

Masvidal has remained quiet over his next steps, but an announcement must be made soon to begin the build-up. ‘Find all the latest boxing news and MMA breaking updates on boxingnews.com
