Ryan Garcia Rules Out A Devin Haney Rematch – ‘It’s Getting Embarrassing For Him’
Ryan Garcia says he has no interest in giving Devin Haney a rematch.
The fight ended in controversial circumstances after Garcia dropped Haney three times to win a majority decision. However, the result was turned into a no-contest after Garcia failed VADA tests for Ostarine. He subsequently received a one-year ban, meaning he cannot box until April 2025. Haney then vacated his WBC Junior Welterweight Title after only Top Tank made a purse bid for his mandatory against Sandor Martin.
Haney took some time off after suggestions that his commercial brand had been damaged as he sought to regroup. The Dream has since sued Garcia and put Golden Boy in the lawsuit. He argues that Garcia is responsible for battery, fraud and unjust enrichment.
Reports indicate that Haney could seek as much as $50 million to $100 million. However, Garcia is not letting that lie down. The boxer has stated that he will fight his case, stating that even if he comes out second best, he has no intention of giving Haney a rematch. He even argued that he could have grounds to sue.
Garcia On Haney
“It’s a money grab. What he’s doing is going to get him more money. I don’t know why he’s dragging it out. He’s going to take two Ls. One in the courtroom, one in the ring…Let’s say they take all my money in the lawsuit. That’s not going to hurt me. None of this is going to stop me. I can’t wait for the trial so I can make them look stupid.
“Anytime I wanted to hit him, I could hit him. When I turned it up on him, it was like, ‘boom, boom, boom.’ I’m not going to give him a rematch after this. After the suing and all the funny business…It’s getting very embarrassing for him. I’m thinking about fighting in Dubai or Tokyo. I really don’t know what the lawsuit is about. Supposedly, they’re suing me for battery. If anything, he battered me at the Empire State Building,” Garcia said
What’s Next?
Garcia has said he wants to take a tune-up fight before considering the bigger fights. He has been linked with Errol Spence Jr., Sebastian Fundora, and even Terence Crawford. A fight against Spence gives Garcia a big name on his resume. Spence is also not in the best form, having been knocked out by Crawford in his last fight.
He was dropped three times before he was stopped in the ninth round. Spence took a lot of punishment as he underwent cataract surgery on his right eye. Garcia will then fancy his chances. But fights against Fundora and Crawford offer Garcia legacy. Fundora is the WBO and WBC Junior Middleweight Champion, while Crawford holds the WBA belt. That gives Garcia the chance to win his first-ever world title. It leaves Garcia with plenty to think about.
