Ryan Garcia Gets A One-Year Ban For PEDs - 'They Took My Victory Away'

Ryan Garcia has been suspended for one year following his failed VADA test for Ostarine.

The New York State Athletic Commission ruled that Garcia’s win over Devin Haney is now a no-contest, with Haney’s undefeated record going back to 31-0. Garcia is also required to pay $1.1 million from his purse to Golden Boy Promotions and a $10,000 state fine. The news comes shortly after Garcia announced his retirement from the sport, hinting that a ban was on the way.

Garcia failed for Ostarine after two urine samples taken on April 19 and April 20 found the banned substance. Ostarine is known for improving stamina and muscle growth. It also allows fighters to lose fat. Garcia rejected any intentional use. He took measures to try to prove his innocence. He submitted a hair follicle test, which came back negative. The boxer also tested his supplements, which tested positive for Ostarine.

However, since they were unsealed, it was not conclusive enough to prove contamination. Amir Khan managed to show that his failed test for Ostarine was due to unintentional usage. But that did not stop him from getting a two-year ban. The news means that Garcia must now focus on keeping his mind in a good place. He has previously been out of the sport with mental health issues after beating Luke Campbell. Given his mother is also battling breast cancer, Garcia must stay focused on making a comeback. There has been a widespread reaction from both sides to the news.

Reaction

“I want to thank the commission and the fans who stood by me during this whole process. The facts are the facts and I wasn’t on an even playing field. Happy I was able to receive justice for what happened. It’s all part of my story and it’s only going to make me better. I look to enjoy this time with my family and friends and see what’s next…

“I’m a clean athlete and boxing is a brutal sport where one fight can literally change your life. I think it important for fighters to be clean and I want to become an advocate for clean athletes for my experience in this situation,” Haney said

Garcia Responds

“They took my victory away. It’s okay, I’m retired. I’ll come back in a year. I was already retired so I’ll just come back out of retirement for a year. Nothing that was in my system was enough for any!!!!!!! This is why I’m done with the game. I never…cheated…I don’t give a [damn]. I’m hitting the switch again. Take away my victory add that on to the list of the[ things] I’m already going [through]. I’m ready for business. Get ready I already ain’t give a [damn]. Run when you see me.

“I really hope boxing good without me. I fought everyone and was willing to. They have turned [their] back on me. I’m innocent. I stand by that I don’t care what everyone says. Gun [to] my head I say I didn’t take PEDs,” Garcia
