Xander Zayas Vs. Jaron Ennis Breakdown
Xander Zayas and Jaron Ennis will meet at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on June 27 — and the unified junior middleweight titles are on the line.
Zayas enters as the champion, having built his title reign through two demanding performances. He claimed the vacant WBO strap last July with a victory over Jorge Garcia before travelling to San Juan in January to unify against Abass Baraou, adding the WBA belt and establishing himself as one of the most credible young champions in the division.
Ennis arrives as the most dangerous welterweight to move up in recent memory. "Boots" unified the entire welterweight division before stepping up to 154 pounds last October, announcing his presence at the new weight class by stopping Uisma Lima in under two minutes. The Vergil Ortiz fight, which would have been his first significant test at junior middleweight, fell apart over promotional complications.
The Approach
Zayas will try to make this a long, physical fight and use every inch of his size and reach advantage — he's a naturally bigger junior middleweight. His jab will be the primary tool, both to control distance and to establish early that Ennis is operating in unfamiliar physical territory. He'll look to work the body consistently, targeting the midsection to test whether Ennis's frame can absorb punishment at a weight class he's only recently settled into.
Ennis will look to establish early that his speed translates at 154, getting off first and making Zayas think defensively before he can settle into his own rhythm. Ennis will use lateral movement to avoid fighting in straight lines where Zayas' size advantage matters most, and he'll look to land in combination rather than trading single shots. The Lima stoppage in under two minutes was a statement.
