White Shuts Down Usman Retirement Talk

Kamaru Usman lost a unanimous decision to Dricus du Plessis, as calls for him to retire came quickly.

Dana White pushed back against the notion that Usman's performance warranted the kind of concern that ends careers: "Both guys performed and looked good. When you see the 'holy s--- these guys should retire' fights, that's not it."

Dana’s argument was contextual. Usman moved up to middleweight to take the fight, meaning he was a smaller man competing against one of the division's genuine elite. Du Plessis is the number one or two middleweight in the world. Losing to him on a night where you showed heart and competitive spirit is not the same thing as a shot fighter being exposed.

"He's accomplished so much, and he's fighting literally the number one or two best guy in the world who is way bigger than he is. I think Kamaru has done enough in his career — it's up to him. It's not like he's some young guy that hasn't done anything. This guy has done it all,” White

The wins that defined Usman — an eleven-fight welterweight title reign that stands as one of the most dominant in the division's history — are not diminished by the current results, but the trajectory is what it is and the sport is not always kind about how it frames those numbers.

Usman himself did not sound like a man preparing a retirement announcement. In his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier, he left every option open: "Whether one, wherever the opportunity is at, that's where I'm going,” Usman

At 39, Usman is the kind of established name the UFC deploys to test rising contenders — fighters who benefit from the credibility of beating someone with Usman's history, even if the current version no longer represents the ceiling of the division. Whether Usman continues, and where, will become clear in the coming weeks. Saturday night, at least, was not the ending that the retirement callers saw it as.
