White Awaits Gaethje Decision On Volkanovski Fight

The UFC is waiting on Justin Gaethje to commit to his next move, with a champion-versus-champion clash against Alexander Volkanovski possible if the lightweight titleholder opts to continue.

Gaethje captured the undisputed 155-pound belt when he stopped Ilia Topuria at UFC Freedom 250 in June but has stayed silent on his plans since. Volkanovski has pushed for another crack at lightweight gold and Dana White confirmed the promotion would back that fight.

Promotion Ready To Build Around Featherweight King

White told The Jim Rome Show that the featherweight champion has earned whatever opportunity he wants. "I would pretty much do anything for Alexander Volkanovski at this point in his career," White said, per Sherdog.

The holdup centers on Gaethje's plans. White described the lightweight champion as coming off an incredible victory at the White House and said talks are ongoing. The promotion expects a firm answer soon.

Volkanovski has said Arman Tsarukyan has earned first claim to a title shot. The Australian also floated stepping in against Tsarukyan for a vacant strap should Gaethje walk away from the sport. No decision date has been announced.
