What's Next For George Kambosos?
George Kambosos Jr. suffered a fourth loss from his last six fights, as he came out second best to Richardson Hitchins, raising questions over his future.
Kambosos was stopped in the eighth round, as he failed to become a two-weight world champion. It was also the second time in his last three fights where he had been stopped, having experienced this against Vasiliy Lomachenko in his last fight at 135 pounds. Kambosos has developed a stellar resume, getting the most out of his talent. His major breakthrough came when he upset Teofimo Lopez in 2021 to become the unified lightweight champion. That win earned him mega fights, twice facing off against Devin Haney and a sole fight with Loma. Those fights secured Kambosos’ financial future.

Kambosos could still pursue the Lopez rematch. Teofimo’s only loss came against Kambosos, where he later revealed he had breathing issues entering the fight. Lopez also argued that he had won the fight, where most of the boxing community had him losing. There would be no better time to face Kambosos, given his lack of form. The fight would produce big pursues, giving both fighters a reason to make it.

Kambosos may also turn his attention to fellow Australian Liam Paro. The latter lost his IBF Junior Welterweight Title to Hitchins in his first defense. Paro shocked the world when he beat Subriel Matias to secure the belt against someone many saw as the boogeyman of the division. A Kambosos-Paro fight would sell out in Australia. Since Paro and Kambosos have close ties with Matchroom, the fight would be easy to make.
Retire
Alternatively, Kambosos may retire from the sport. He has earned enough money to leave, while a world title shot is not forthcoming. However, it may be difficult to go out on a loss since the Australian has developed a reputation for leaving everything in the ring. A farewell fight could make sense, as Kambosos’ following social media post raised suggestions he may be thinking about life outside of boxing.
