WBC Orders Benavidez Cruiserweight Defense Before Opetaia

David Benavidez must defend his cruiserweight titles against Michal Cieslak before facing Jai Opetaia, the WBC announced after declaring its 200-pound belt vacant.

The sanctioning body stripped Noel Mikaelian following his loss to Opetaia on Saturday, a non-title bout that proceeded despite a threatened cease-and-desist from Don King Productions, according to Bad Left Hook. Cieslak, who held the WBC interim strap, has been elevated to full champion and ordered into a mandatory with Benavidez. The winner must then face Opetaia.

Benavidez Already Holds Two Cruiserweight Belts

Benavidez, 32-0 with 26 knockouts, already owns the WBA and WBO titles at cruiserweight. Sanctioning bodies historically blocked champions of rival organizations from contesting their vacant belts, but the WBC has allowed the fight to proceed. Benavidez and Opetaia verbally agreed to meet in May 2027 immediately after the Australian's win over Mikaelian, leaving the Mexican-American plenty of time to clear the Cieslak hurdle.

Cieslak, 28-2 with 22 stoppages, is on a seven-fight run since losing to Lawrence Okolie in 2022. The 37-year-old Pole captured the interim WBC strap by stopping a faded Jean Pascal in Quebec last June. His record outside Poland stands at 1-2, and oddsmakers are unlikely to favor him against a fighter who has ruled two divisions.

The Benavidez-Cieslak bout is expected to take place in early 2027, with the Opetaia unification targeted for May.
