Usyk-Verhoeven Preview: Why the Pyramids Can't Save This Mismatch

Oleksandr Usyk will stop Rico Verhoeven today at the Pyramids of Giza, and the only real question is how long the Dutch kickboxer lasts against boxing's best heavyweight.

BoxingScene's preview of the WBC heavyweight title bout characterizes the matchup as a significant mismatch despite the spectacle of the Egyptian setting. Usyk, 24-0 with 15 knockouts, is widely considered the sport's pound-for-pound king and has never entered a fight unprepared. Verhoeven, whose lone pro boxing appearance came 12 years ago, brings a decorated kickboxing resume but won just 16 of his 64 Glory bouts by stoppage — most of them via kicks that won't be legal tonight.

Why Verhoeven's Kickboxing Dominance Won't Translate

The 37-year-old Verhoeven has not lost a kickboxing match since 2015, a run that naturally breeds confidence. Trained by Peter Fury, he reportedly believes his toughness and size can trouble the Ukrainian champion. But as BoxingScene notes, fighters of Usyk's caliber and experience do not lose to opponents with one professional boxing bout on their record. "Take away the background, those pyramids and the sand, and strip whatever is happening down to only what is happening, then the true value should become apparent," the outlet wrote.

Usyk's resume includes two wins over Tyson Fury, two over Anthony Joshua, and a unified cruiserweight reign in which he cleared out the division. The 39-year-old has shown none of the complacency that plagued Fury ahead of his scare against Francis Ngannou in 2023. BoxingScene predicts Usyk will break through around the midpoint of the scheduled 12-rounder, once Verhoeven's durability meets the champion's accumulated pressure.

The fight is expected to begin late Saturday night Cairo time, with Usyk's WBC title and unbeaten record on the line.
