UFC Releases Footage Of When McGregor Broke His Toe
Conor McGregor has spoken before about the broken toe that cancelled his 2024 comeback. Now there is footage of the exact moment it happened.
The UFC released a sequence filmed during McGregor's preparation for his scheduled fight with Michael Chandler at UFC 303. The footage shows McGregor sparring with teammates, working through camp, building toward what was then a much-anticipated return after three years away following the leg fracture against Dustin Poirier in 2021. Then he throws a kick, catches his toe on a teammate, and the camp is over.
John Kavanagh's voice can be heard in the background suggesting they call it there. The fight was cancelled shortly after. McGregor addressed what happened in an interview included in the same segment. The accountability was direct and unsparing.
"There were lapses in concentration in the training. I am the leader of the training so if I'm lapsing in concentration it filters down, and that is what took place — a training partner had no protection and next thing you know? Bang. Broke my f---ing toe.
"The injury happened. It was very, very difficult. It was my only time I ever pulled out of a fight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship and it was a very tough one,” McGregor

McGregor has competed hurt, taken short-notice fights, and built a reputation that rests partly on the willingness to show up regardless of circumstances. Pulling out of the Chandler fight was, by his own account, the only time he has withdrawn from a UFC booking.
Whether Saturday night validates that framing depends on what McGregor does against Holloway. The obstacle this weekend is a former featherweight champion.
