UFC unveils Meta UFC Rankings to replace media panel
The UFC announced a partnership with Meta to launch Meta UFC Rankings, a machine-learning system that will replace the promotion's traditional media voting panel when it goes live June 22, 2026. Rankings will be calculated automatically using fight data and statistical modeling, according to a joint statement released today.
UFC president Dana White told reporters he has long been frustrated with the existing rankings structure. "I've been unhappy with the rankings and always believed there had to be a better way," White said, per UFC.com. "We've always been a company that runs toward technology and innovation and now we've worked with Meta to integrate it directly into our rankings system."
How the Meta UFC Rankings system works
The new framework evaluates fighters using metrics including outcome probability, win type, recent trajectory, and weight-class variables. Wins carry different value depending on opponent ranking and finish type — stopping a top-five contender counts more than edging an unranked opponent on the scorecards. The algorithm also applies inactivity penalties to fighters who go extended stretches without competing and weights recent performances more heavily than older results.
Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg said the partnership allows for analysis "at a much deeper level, helping create more transparent and accurate rankings," according to UFC.com. The system will update by Monday following each official UFC event, with rankings posted at ufc.com/rankings.
The transition marks a significant shift for a promotion that has relied on a panel of media voters since introducing official rankings in 2013. The first automated rankings under the new system are set to publish June 23, 2026.
