Tom Aspinall mocks Ciryl Gane's fouls with helmet training video
Tom Aspinall has started camp for his heavyweight title unifier against Ciryl Gane by putting on a motorcycle helmet and a steel cup.
The UFC champion posted an Instagram video Tuesday showing a montage of Gane landing low blows, eye pokes, and shots to the back of opponents' heads, then cut to himself wearing protective gear during pad work. "Training for the rematch has begun," Aspinall wrote, per Sherdog.
Gane's illegal strikes at UFC 320 and recent win
Aspinall and Gane were set to fight for the heavyweight belt at UFC 320 last October, but the bout was ruled a no contest after Gane poked Aspinall in both eyes during the first round. The Englishman could not continue. With Aspinall recovering from the injury, Gane faced Alex Pereira for an interim strap earlier this month and stopped the Brazilian in round two. Multiple observers flagged several back-of-the-head punches in the finish.
The Frenchman has drawn criticism on multiple occasions for fouls that went unpunished or led to stoppages. Aspinall's video referenced at least three separate incidents involving illegal contact from Gane.
The unification bout is expected to be announced once Aspinall is medically cleared to compete. No date has been set.
