Arman Tsarukyan Should Accept Volkanovski's Offer and Run

Arman Tsarukyan needs to take Alexander Volkanovski's offer for a vacant lightweight title fight and stop waiting around for Islam Makhachev. The UFC 333 situation has thrown his championship timeline into chaos, and sitting idle while the division sorts itself out is the worst possible play for a fighter who turns 28 in December and has already been knocking on the door for two years.

Volkanovski's public challenge is a gift. The former featherweight king carries name value that dwarfs almost everyone at 155 pounds not named Makhachev, and a vacant belt is still a belt. Tsarukyan beat Beneil Dariush and Charles Oliveira in consecutive fights to earn his number-one contender status. That work doesn't evaporate if he pivots to Volkanovski instead of chasing Makhachev through whatever mess the promotion is cooking up next. The Armenian has proven he belongs in title conversations — now he needs to capitalize before the window closes.

The Makhachev fight was always going to be a nightmare stylistically. Tsarukyan gave him a competitive first round in their April 2019 meeting, but that was five years ago when both were unranked prospects. Makhachev has since become a suffocating champion who has finished Oliveira, dominated Volkanovski twice, and controlled Dustin Poirier. Tsarukyan has improved dramatically, but betting on a rematch with the champion when a parallel path to gold is sitting right there is pure ego. Volkanovski is hittable, has been finished by strikes before, and represents a far more winnable fight for someone with Tsarukyan's pressure wrestling and power.

The argument against taking Volkanovski is that it cheapens the achievement, that Tsarukyan earned his shot at the real king. But sports do not reward patience — they reward action. If Makhachev's next defense gets delayed by injury, by Zuffa Boxing obligations, or by the promotion's matchmaking whims, Tsarukyan could spend another year in the queue. That is how careers stall. Oliveira waited years for his title shot and won it at 31. Tsarukyan has the chance to wear gold before 30 and then either unify with Makhachev or leverage championship status into bigger paydays. Either outcome beats sitting around as the number-one contender while the division moves without him.

Volkanovski has made the offer public. The UFC has not shut it down. Tsarukyan should sign the bout agreement, beat the former pound-for-pound king, and let Makhachev come to him. Waiting for permission to fight for what you have already earned is not how champions think. This is the move.
